Chart of Mao Zedong

THE DICTATOR IN THE CHART OF MAO

In 2009 I wrote about the chart of Mao Zedong on Astropost. Now I do it again! Why? I started with thinking about Uranus conjunct Pluto in the 60s and remembered that Mao Zedong (or Tse Tung, if you want) had this conjunction in opposition with his progressed Sun when he demanded a complete Cultural Revolution of his people. Next year is the start of a series of squares between Uranus and Pluto. Find the Sun or progressed Sun of a leader and perhaps you find the country that will undergo a forced upon or dramatic change? Maybe, but I tumbled into the story of the life of Mao again and wondered about his chart: WHERE IS THE DICTATOR IN THE CHART?

Mao was the chief responsible for more than 40 million dead Chinese men, women and children and he wasn't even ashamed. People were starving. He ignored warnings (and even increased his efforts to make China an industrial country). He didn't tolerate other visions. He was a brutal dictator. How could that happen? Can we blame his chart? Well, given the cultural background, lack of democracy and moment in history it was a bad idea to give all power into the hands of a Capricorn with Leo Moon and Sun/Moon conjunct Saturn (semi square Pluto). Because that is the combination of die hard ambition.

CHARACTER

Because of Mao’s policy millions (some say 45 million) died. Most of them starved, the rest was murdered. What in his chart is corresponding with those nasty facts? Who was Mao? He was the son of a well to do farmer, supposed to become a teacher. If the Communist Party had not allowed him to return after he was criticized and named an opportunist, we would not have known his name. Slowly his star rose and he became a leading figure. Leadership is obvious in his chart. We see the Capricorn Sun ‘calling’ (no major aspects in sign or orb 5 degrees). That means that he drew attention, somehow, anyhow, for example by performance or… leadership. Here are the main indications in his chart (the Astro ID of Mao):

1. Sun ‘calling’ (= leadership) (see about Unaspected planets, Sun, Moon)

2. Mars rising before the Sun (military, activism, standing up for yourself)

3. Yod of Moon, Neptune and Ascendant (apex). I like to see this as an indication for the ability to ‘feel’ weakness

4. Tight square between Moon and Uranus alarmed his need for change, change, change

In a way there is already the picture of a military leader with a sensor for weak persons around him and a need to change the world into a better place. Why was he a dictator? Dictators often have a Sun-Saturn affliction (not wanting others to criticize them). Mao Zedong had a variation on the theme. a. A ‘calling’ Sun in Capricorn might have a similar effect (Capricorn is ruled by Saturn, a Sun in Capricorn without major aspects points at being ambitious and in control at any possible level). b. This ' calling' Sun is quintile Saturn (orb 1.3 degree; for finding a creative way to be in charge). A quintile is not an affliction. It is only a great tool in the hands of a man who wants total power...c. The midpoint Sun/Moon (motivation) is conjunct Saturn (to be motivated to be in charge) and semi square Pluto (to be motivated by authority, money or power). Saturn-Pluto is the combination of the die hard (see Astromarkt: http://www.astromarkt.net/saturn-in-aspect-with-pluto.html).

Here are a few dates in history and the positions in his chart at those moments.

LEADER OF REPUBLIC in 1949

Mao Tse Tung was a Capricorn with a Leo Moon. It is the combination of wanting control and longing for glamour that often increases ambition and makes the nativity want to be in charge. The Sun/Moon sign of Mao is Libra, just like the Sun sign of the People’s Republic (October 1, 1949). When Mao became the leader of the nation, he had transit Uranus square Sun and progressed Mars (Progressed Mars conjunct natal Sun) and there were still a few more battles to win. The progressed Sun had changed sign a year earlier, for a change in life style.

GREAT LEAP

When it became clear that his plans for agriculture failed, and people starved, he didn’t correct himself. In fact, he was the architect of the famine of the late 50s and early 60s. He announced the ‘Great Leap Forward in January 1958, with Progressed Sun square Pluto (becoming a fanatic) and after Prgr Mars inconjunct Pluto (using power or violence with a loss involved). If the time of birth is correct, at that time the MC and Ascendant changed sign and Progressed Midheaven was inconjunct Quaoar, which is a statement for a loss involved with creating a new reality. The Chinese Progressed Sun was sextile progressed Pluto: a moment for a change…

CULTURAL REVOLUTION

The Cultural Revolution, a successful attempt to restore his damaged name, was with Uranus conjunct Pluto both opposition his Progressed Sun and Progressed Sun biquintile Saturn. In the Progressed chart Pluto was inconjunct Midheaven and Eris quintile MC to show a come back with a loss (or difficulties in maintaining the positions) combined with a creative way to handle discord. The man had already turned into a dictator. Now he became even more suppressive.

CONCLUSION

The explanation for Mao’s dictatorship is perhaps also a matter of culture and historic background. But his character (according to the chart) was that of a man with ambition to be in control at all levels, not accepting other views or comments. Let us never ever make a man a statesman with all power when there is reason to suspect that he won’t tolerate competition or revolt.
